What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the sensation of hearing sound in your ears or head when no external sound is present. If you’re experiencing signs of Tinnitus, you’re not alone.

About 1 in 5 people are affected by this phenomenon. Most Tinnitus sufferers describe the effects as “ringing in the ears,” but it is not uncommon to experience additional hearing symptoms such as buzzing, hissing, whistling, roaring, and even chirping.  The discernible symptoms and the extent of their harm vary and each individual may experience tinnitus differently.

Tinnitus is not a disease or even a condition- it’s a symptom of a different underlying issue or condition you may have, such as hearing loss, ear infection, or even high blood pressure. Tinnitus symptoms may come and go with no clear start or end making it important to speak with your audiologist about what you are experiencing.

Tinnitus Treatment

Although Tinnitus cannot be “cured” 100%, there are methods of treatment that can reduce or mitigate the symptoms you are experiencing. Depending on the cause of your tinnitus, there are different treatment methods available to those seeking relief. Your local audiologist can assist you in determining your symptoms, the severity, and the possible causes behind your tinnitus.

Once your hearing specialist has assessed your symptoms and the possible causes of your tinnitus, a solution may be recommended. Treatment may be as simple as a thorough ear cleaning or behavioral therapy to help you block out the noise of mild tinnitus but moderate to severe tinnitus may be best treated by the use of a hearing device.

Hearing aids have been very successful in the treatment of tinnitus even if hearing loss is not present. Many of today’s hearing aids can be equipped with noise-masking features that help to cover or filter the effects of tinnitus, providing relief from the undesired noise.

Tinnitus Masker

Using the power of our Multiflex Tinnitus Technology, hearing aids can be used to create a customizable and comforting sound stimulus that can be fine-tuned by a hearing specialist to soothe the unique, irritating sounds a Tinnitus sufferer hears.

Compatible with many of our hearing aid solutions, the tinnitus masker is a new way to manage your tinnitus with flexibility and control for all-day relief.
